On October 3, 2024, Azerbaijan hosted a significant event under the "Baku Climate Action Week" (BCAW) to address the challenges posed by climate change and to promote sustainable development. The event brought together a range of stakeholders, including government representatives, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector. Discussions focused on innovative solutions for mitigating the impacts of climate change, and participants shared best practices from various fields.
During BCAW, seminars and roundtable discussions were held on critical topics such as renewable energy, sustainable urban development, and climate resilience. These dialogues facilitated exchanges of insights and strengthened the collaborative approach needed to tackle climate issues.
A particular highlight was the session held on October 3, titled "The Role of Higher Education in Climate Change." This session underscored the important contributions that academic institutions make to this global challenge. Universities, research institutions, and technical training centers explored how the education system can support climate action. Drawing inspiration from experiences in countries like the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates, where leading universities have established climate networks, the session aimed to encourage the formation of a similar network in Azerbaijan. Such a network would help enhance climate-related capabilities within the higher education sector and promote research and innovation in this critical field.
Sevda Rzayeva, an associate professor representing the Baku Eurasian University, participated in the event, contributing to discussions on the effective development of this network among educational institutions. This network would foster knowledge-sharing and encourage collaborative efforts against climate challenges, as well as support sustainable practices and equip future generations with the necessary skills to respond to climate change.
At the close of the event, BCAW’s primary objectives were reiterated, emphasizing the need to strengthen international cooperation in the fight against climate change and support sustainable development initiatives in Azerbaijan.
